The atomic bomb will always be a subject I will have mixed feeling about. The United States is supposed to be a country that is based on morals, and does dropping the bomb go completely against what we believe to be true? I get why we did it, it was said that as much as 250,000 Americans could have died if the US would have invaded Japan. With the Atomic Bomb, no Americans had to die. Is it better that 250,000 Japanese people die than our own beloved country? So in the end, I do favor the dropping of the bomb. The US faced years of fighting and many lives were to be lost if they invaded Japan, by dropping the bombs, they save many soldiers from dying.

D-DAY

Also known as Operation Neptune and Operation Overload, D-Day was one pivotal battle in WWII. The attack went down on Tuesday, June 6, 1944 at 6:30 on the beaches of Normandy, France. It was the largest single day invasion of all time sending 150,000-200,000 troops to invade German. The goal was to invade Europe’s mainland and free it from Nazi occupation. The attack was led by mostly the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada. Also, Norway, Poland, and free French fighters fought on D-Day. Dwight D. Eisenhower originally wanted to have D-Day on June 5th, but because of bad weather, it was postponed until June 6th. The Germans suffered the most casualties for one single country that day with 9,000 killed or wounded. The Allied forces suffered 10,000 killed or wounded. It ended with an Allied victory, and eventually this battle would help lead to the end of the war.

WE CAN DO IT!

Also it is called “Rosie the Riveter” the “We Can Do It” poster by J. Howard Miller is widely popular today and is an icon for the Feminist Movement. The poster was a cultural icon and it was made to show support for the women in the war. It focuses on the women who worked in the Manufacturing plants in the 1940s. It showed the women’s economic power that they had while other men were at war. The main imagery is the women holder up her arm and showing her strength. The poster was supposed to persuade women into getting into the work force. The model for the poster being Geraldine Doyle, this poster has made more of an impact on society than any other poster from WWII, especially because it is still very popular today and still used to support the feminist movement.

TOP 5...reason for WWII

Treaty of Versailles

The treaty of Versailles was signed in Versailles, France exactly 5 years after the assassination that stated the war in the first place. It officially ended the war between Germany and the Allied forces with the United States. It stated that Germany started the word and put huge reparations on the country. It also said that Germany was not allowed to build an army. This angered Germany; they soon realized that the treaty had no real power and they just ignored it.

Pearl Harbor

Although it may not be one of the causes to the beginning of the war, it is hard not to include this because it is the reason the US went to war. Based on the island of Oahu, it was formed in 1911. At 6:05 a.m. on December 7, 1941, the harbor was bombed almost unexpectedly by Japanese Bombers. Over 2,400 innocent people died and the country was infuriated. Soon the US declared war on Japan and later would declare war on Germany. To make it more personal, about half the deaths were form the USS Arizona.

Invasion of Poland

On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland. Before then, Germany said they were going to unite all German speaking Countries. Britain, France etc looked past this because it was understandable even though it went against their treaty; it was not worth going to war over. But Germany’s invasion of Poland was completely unnecessary. From then on it was obvious that Germany was trying to make an empire.

Japan Conquest

By the time the US entered the war it was obvious that Japan also was trying to build an empire. Japan was ruthlessly trying to take China, and there empire was growing at an alarming rate. One reason for Japan’s conquest was a search for natural resources.

Holocaust

Sadly, this was not the main reason why the US entered the war. It showed even further the insanity that Hitler and Nazi Germany had. In the Holocaust there was 11 million deaths; 11 million different reasons to why the US and other ally forces needed to fight making it a necessary war.

In the life; WWI

Propaganda and the News Media were big in the early 20th century when WWI is put in the picture. 2 major things were the Committee on Public Information or Creel Committee and the Schenck v. United States. The CPI was an independent agency ran by the US government to keep people interested and behind the US going into WWI. In order for the US to be successful in The Great War, It needed to be backed by the people of the US. The CPI did things like show pictures of Germans killing babies and women. Also, the CPI was backed by Hollywood and an organization called the Four Minute Men. The FMM was a group of over 75,000 members and spoke many speeches throughout the country about why we had to go to war. In the case of Schenck v. the US, it is a much more disturbing case. It basically says that in some cases the Bills of Rights don’t apply. It really gives the US power to bend its own rules and have total control over its citizens, saying we are allowed to say what we want, but only to a certain extent.

WWI?

Although I believe the United States did much good, based on the WWI reading, I do not believe the US should have fought in WWI. Just based off of what we had just learned about the war of 1812, I don’t think we should have aided the British, and if William Jennings is right, Britain sucks just as much as Germany, because they fought very similar to Germany. The US fighting in WWI will eventually lead to the US fighting in many other wars in the world that we really have no need to fight in because they didn’t HAVE to fight in it. For example WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Persian Gulf, Iraq, etc. At the time, the US wanted to fight because Germany was sinking US ships, but really, traders chose to go to Britain, they didn’t need to. Before WWI, the US always chose to stay out of foreign affairs and we thrived as a country because we didn’t care what other people did, we cared about ourselves. There is no reason why American blood must be shed just because other countries have to fight in order to be happy. 116,516 Americans ended up dying from WWI. Many died from Disease. Would the US have saved these live if they would have never went to war? Was the cost of going to war greater than what would have occurred if they wouldn’t have gone? I guess we will never know.
